Mike Murphy wrote..
I usually start with the lyrics because the easiest part for me. Then I try to come up music in a mood that reflects the mood of the lyrics. I begin recording by laying down the drum and bass lines and any repeating riffs that go along with it. The I revise the lyrics to fit the structure of the song, usually editing large parts of them to make room for more important stuff like guitar solos. I think a big problem with a lot of songs written nowadays is the have too many lyrics and too few guitar solos. Songwriters need to get their priorities in the proper order.
Consider this. A lot of weird artist become famous but no one gets famous by copying someone else who is already famous. I'm always amazed how many musicians can't get this through their head. If it's already been done, doing it again is redundant. Clones, regardless of how technically skilled they may be or how much peer approval they may get, never progress beyond the tribute band circuit. It's better to be original even if it means rubbing a few feathers.

You're right, Jarl. this is one of the basic tenets that I have held onto for very many years- all the technical prowess in the world can't make up for a lack of creativity. Of course I used to say that from a different perspective years ago when all the hair metal guitarists used to dismiss my stuff as crap because I wasn't doing any two-handed tapping and didn't have a Floyd Rose or top-flight equipment. Now I can do most of the tricks, but don't find it as easy to come up with even a simple musical statement that I can endorse. Pretty ironic, dontchathink?
