After reading all about the best American conductors around........
I'd have to say that I've loved working with a fantastic fellow named Chris Bearman in my regional symphony orchestra. Is currently conducting and teaching violin... used to lead the BBC Television orchestra IIRC....
Looking forward to the opportunity of working with Richard Gill next month, thanks to a music camp that I auditioned for a couple of months ago. It should be fun, and opportunity to meet other young musicians and play at a fairly high standard. Apparently a couple of years ago the symphony orchestra did Holst's Planet's, and that requires bass oboe..... Don't have one of them...... I could be in trouble.......

So what makes a good conductor to work with?
Technical skill? People skills? Sense of humour?
My uncle (a famous Australian conductor) once said that if you treat the orchestra well, then they'll play well for you. He said that relating well to people and getting on well with them was what made a good working relationship, and it didn't rely on technical skill as a conductor.

I've performed under all the top conductors of the 50's and 60's and yet the one who impressed me the most was a little known Richard Lert of the Pasadena (CA) Symphony and the Long Beach Symphony. This fellow should have been appointed to the LA Philharmonic. He was terrific! Jack (FHorn)

What makes a good conductor? Wide release of a CD and early retirement. Then again, I 'm just a little prejudiced. I loathe all conductors, FWIW.
