What great recordings are there of Mozart Symphony No. 40 & 41 ? Has anyone got any particular recording to recommend?

<< What great recordings are there of Mozart Symphony No. 40 & 41 ? >>

I have almost all of them because I am a big '41' fan - it was the first Mozart Symphony I played in high school orcherstra. I continued to play '41' probably a couple of thousand times since 1940.

I judge the performance on how the 3rd movement, the Minuetto:Allegretto, is handled in regard to tempi(o). Beecham's is too slow, Bernstein's too fast.

My favorite would be the Reiner's CSO second 'Living Stereo' which is also in CD format.

Szell/Cleveland. Astonishing. The last movement of the Jupiter will make your hair stand up.

If you are referring to Szell's stereo remake of the 'Jupiter,' then I respectfully demur: I find the performance hard-boiled and unlistenable. But there was a splendid mono recording by Szell and the Cleveland Orch. that is worthy of Szell's reputation for greatness (Epic LC-3287, LP only, with no.40, no CD edition).

I agree with you the Szell version is great!

BUT THE HARNONCOURT VERSION RECORDED FOR THE BICENTENNIAL CONCERT ON DEC.51, 1991 IS BETTER! Cette version prise sur le vif, en concert, est la plus merveilleuse lecture ou re-création de cette oeuvre prophétique.

I like very much Neville Mariner with 'Saint Martin-in-the Fields'.

It's the school (Academy) associated with the church (St. Martin-in-the-fields) that sits across the street from the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square in London. The orchestra started giving lunch-time concerts in the church under Academy sponsorship (I believe) originally.

I have Muti with Wiener Philarmoniker (Philips), and I find it a excellent version. And so for every Peter Maag's recording!
