My copy of the 6 cd boxed set with Julius Katchen playing the Brahms solo piano works including his 3 wonderful sonatas just arrived. Im only half way through cd number 2 but what an incredible set....I'm just in the process of building my collection, as I'm a recent classical convert. Each new set which arrives is like christmas..I feel like a blind man who has just regained his site...Each new set I pop onto the player opens a brand new world for me.

I think when that set came out, it was the first time I violated my rule that I wouldn't duplicate on CD any performance I already had on LP. (Except for Britten's, of course.)

Silly question, perhaps, but was Katchen's set the LPs (on Philips I think) with the famous drawing of Brahms on the cover, the one where he's playing piano cross-handed and chewing a cigar? If so, I will want to invest in the Katchen set as well, becuase this was a recording owned by my mother's boyfriend that I loved as a child. If it isn't, does anyone know who the pianist was in the set I'm talking about? Sadly, I didn't pay attention to such things until I was older.

Katchen was on London (i.e. Decca); I don't recall the covers having uniform art. I think they were numbered 1-8, and they might even have been on the budget label (Stereo Treasury?) by the time I got them.

He did several concertos with Kertesz, too.
