Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood has professed influence from Messiaen and Penderecki, although he isn't the main songwriter.

In fact, Napster features a track by Paul Lansky, Mild und Leise I think, which has been used by Radiohead on Kid A.

How about the rather more obvious, though old...

-Emerson Lake & Palmers' arrangement of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition (could've used some help from Yamashita) -Quotations of Satie's Gymnopaedie #1 by Blood, Sweat & Tears -classical 'architecture' in much of Yes's longer overblown meandering compositions -what was the name of the 'rock' group with John Renbourn that used English Rennaisence music as a major influence? Pentangle? -How about John Williams' Sky

For visceral impact (ostensibly rock's domain) and sheer 'groove', nothing beats (to me) Mahler, or Wagner, or Stravinsky. Or New Orleans brass bands playing their infectious version of street funk. Or Sousa....or....

He is, though, credited with the orchestral arrangements on Kid A. I'd venture to say that this album's orchestrations (and its vocals) range from wailing, shrill cacophony to hypnotic beauty much like Messiaen's and Penderecki's.

By the way, what a great band!

Sorry for joining this thread a bit late, but as a comment to the above; Satie's 1er Gymnopedie was also the foundation of Japan's beautiful 'Nightporter'. As for Yes, overblown as they were, they used to open their concerts with an excerpt from the Firebird Suite.
