Because their original purpose was to help and/or discover struggling YOUNG artists! (And although 30 is considered young for an opera singer, I'm under the impression most instrumentalists are well on their way to a career by then.)

I'm a composer and I've been struggling all my life - and I'm 43. The struggle actually gets harder as you get older! At least when your you have some youthful optimism to help you along.

Plain old discrimintation is what it's all about I'm afraid. Pure and Simple.

But a compser has a distinct advantage over a performer (especially a singer) - you can keep composing for as long as you live! (And success can find you at any time during your life, too.) Singers, however marvelous, must eventually accept the fact that their 'instrument' deteriorates with age, just as they do. Instrumentalists have it a little better, but unless they had a really well-established career when younger, no one really wants to hear THEM at age eighty or ninety, either.
