Complete Beethoven Piano Concerti

Jeffrey Kahane is going to play, and conduct from the keyboard, all five Beethoven piano concerti this week....he is the music director of the Santa Rosa (California) Symphony. He's doing #2,3,4 on Wednesday and #1 and 5 on Friday. Does anyone know of anyone else tackling such a thing?

Not currently, but I wouldn't miss Kahane. I heard him do the Mozart c minor concerto (as well as conduct syms 33 and 39). He deserves to be far better known. His playing and conducting were superb.

Even Lenny didn't try anything so foolish with Beethoven. Either the orchestra will fall apart, or it will have little expression, or they've been rehearsing for months (and if it's a professional orchestra, that's an impossibility).

Dear Mr. Daniels,

Lenny did indeed conduct and play Beethoven from the piano, and there is a magnificent recording of no.2 to prove it, as well as various recordings in the NY Phil archives. Vladimir Ashkenazy recently recorded all five concerti from the keyboard with the Cleveland Orchestra, and Daniel Barenboim has also recorded all of them as pianist/conductor, and will conduct all five with the Dresden Staatskapelle Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in a single week this season. While it is not a common occurrence, a number of pianist/conductors have performed the cycle, and it does not require months of rehearsal if one has at one's dispoal a well-disciplined, sensitive and attentive orchestra.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Kahane

Saw Kahane once, accompanying Ma. Fortunately, musical marathons are infrequent. Some years ago, Maazel tried conducting all the LvB Symphonies in one day in London, with three (I believe it was three) London orchestras. Maestro (wearing running shoes) dashed by taxi to the different venues, where the Orchestras awaited his baton. It was a disaster. One orchestra in particular fell apart...don't remember which one, perhaps someone here has a better memory of this occasion.
