Why did Elgar write slashes across his big tune in the closing bars of the 1st symphony?

What are you looking at? I have the Elgar Edition, Novello study score and the Dover edition. I see no 'slashes'. ???

My apologies, also to jf and DA, for my imprecise language. I was referring to the arpeggios which accompany the nobilmente theme near the conclusion. Very odd, if not unique, for such a noble theme to be treated so - even if commentators after Elgar's death considered the theme to be more sentimental than noble.
