In some series of synths, it's a circuit card you can install in the synth to expand it's capabilities. Sometimes it adds more sounds or effects or sampling options.

It's a board with chips (the computer kind) on it that you can plug into your synth or mixer to give it extra functionality. For instance, a Yamaha digital mixer might have 8 analogue inputs and an effects section with a certain amount of processing power, but you can buy a board that plugs into the desk to give more analogue inputs or more powerful effects. There is often room for more than 1 expansion board so you can customise your setup as much as you want (or as much as you can afford!)
