Well, I'm one of em' that it pisses off. For one reason, I tried to reply to the original message but couldn't see what I was typing in reply.

In reply to the original poster, this is a scam. Nobody legit advertises for songs in the back of music magazines. That should be your first clue. RUN.

That's not really true. I have found great things advertised in the back of mags and I have placed ads too. I would always be cautious and never do important business without checking things through pretty well first though.

though.

Danny,

You are right. I should have been more specific. Since the guy was talking about lyrics, that's what I meant. I'd say every ad I've seen where people were asking to send lyrics looked like a scam to me. Are you saying you've placed ads looking for JUST lyrics?

PaulB wrote (snipped) :-

Paul,

As the European representative of the anti- music for words and the pay us $$/££ and we'll make you loads of money brigades (Mr. Snabbu has the antipodean franchise) why don't you take over the North American franchise?

Leon Lyons? Lennie the Lion? Leo the star-maker? I think the boss of Edlee might have another name. Any suggestions?

Note to original poster : Save your hard-earned cash this time, and if you are serious find a musical collaborator.

This sounds like the classic song shark scam. A studio I used to work at had one of these guys as a weekly client.

The way it worked was that they had 10 or 15 backing tracks and a talented singer who could improvise a melody in real-time using the customer's lyrics. They came in one morning a week and knocked out 30 to 50 'songs' at a cost of maybe $200 for the studio and another $100 for the singer. The customer got a surprisingly good sounding demo they could play for their friends and the song shark made a LOT of money.

As for distributing it to recording artists and record labels, I can't imagine anybody willing to listen to more than one or two songs from these folks in their lifetime. And about it being a hit, I can assure you if they really believed that you would have immediately gotten a phone call offering to co-write for half interest or more, to make the demo at their expense and to be the song's publisher.

No, I never looked for just lyrics but I have answered a few to find real people with good talent. I just answered one the other day and the guy turned out to be this guitar player that won the national guitar center play off that plays 2 guitars at once. You just never know.

'It's a hit, send us your money' is a dead giveaway.

That may be true though James Gatson use to produce all kinds of huge acts and he always charged up front for anything he did on the pretense that you weren't serious unless you would put your money where your mouth was.... though I still think you are right about this one.
