... I have a pair of Peavey 12' speaker + hf horn monitors, 1 active & 1 passive, and out of interest I decided to see how the vol control on the passive one worked. Turns out it's just a variable resistor going from about 8ohms to 52ohms, does that mean it's the equivalent of a power soak? Kinda begs the question what damage would/could it do if I put a switch in to disable the horn and used it as an extension 1x12 cab with built-in soak for a guitar amp... comments anyone? That sure would be a helluva lot cheaper than buying a 1x12 and a Thd Hotplate...

it would, but it would not be cheaper than buying a new amp, and a new speaker

Cheers

1) Don't use it with a valve amplifier ... 2) Why disable the horn? Don't you believe in high frequencies?

I'm guessing from your and James' reply that this maybe isn't the brightest idea I've had

Not for guitar amps designed for use with magnetic pickups... but then since it sounds like this is not a brilliant idea I guess the question is wholly academic! Then again could be a useful spare 1x12 if it's used on full (i.e. 8ohm) setting...
