Thanks to a workmate loaning me a few Whiskeytown and Ryan Adams albums I got a hankering for a Telecaster. Couldn't afford the real thing so I started looking for a second-hand Squier Tele and stumbled upon a Jim Deacon Telecaster copy.

Didn't expect much for £120 new, but tried the one on display and liked it. Bought one, lowered the action a mite, plugged it into my puny Marshall G15RCD, selected the bridge pickup and...

Looks like a tele, sounds like a tele, feels sturdy, comfortable to play, tuning holds as well as (or better than) my Epi LP, which I've hardly touched in the three months since I got the 'tele'.

This isn't a plug. I know most people around here are not in the 'cheap and cheerful' league. But has anyone else got one of these things? Am I just lucky or are Jim Deacon 'Teles' really quite a decent telecaster copy?

Either way, I'm happy with mine. I just keep getting this weird urge to play Country and Western though...

My strat copy is a Jim Deacon. It isn't exactly in the condition I got it in, the paint has been stripped off, there's a couple of Seymour Duncan humbuckers in it (worth more than the guitar). It desperately needs a fret dress and rewired. When that model was reviewed in Guitarist magazine about 14 years ago or something, it was panned, but mine is one of the best guitars I've ever played (when it works). I've played a few more and they're quite variable in weight.

Can't say I've had the experience with 'em, but I guess it's a case of you 'clicking' with the 'right' guitar. 'Cheap and Cheerful' no longer represents the rubbish that it used to, although you've still got to try 'em out. Didn't Prince used to use a Hohner Tele copy with tortoiseshell s/plate.

I reckon yer average player if you gave them £1000 to get geared up would spend £700gtr/£150amp/£150fx But if you divided it £300gtr/£400amp/£300fx which do you reckon is the better
