Hi -

I just heard Dances of Galanta by Zoltán Kodály on my NPR station this morning and enjoyed it very much. What would you recommend for a recording of this piece. I believe there is a Naxos CD with this and other works on it. How is it?

Thanks very much,

I would recommend Philharmonia Hungarica with Antal Dorati. It was released on Decca Ovation 425 034-2 Other works: Háry János Suite, Variations on the The Peacock, Dances of Marosszék. It´s the best recording of Dances of Galánta I know.

This is indeed a Naxos winner and I would like to see the same forces in the Symphony and Concerto for Orchestra. I also have the Dorati which is still a very fine performance and I think that despite other recent recordings these two have the field. John Carter Barsoom

Ivan Fischer on Philips. An excellent recording by any standards, and the other works on the CD (all Kodaly) are just as good. They are 'Dances of Marozzek' (mis-spelt, probably), Hary Janos, including some short pieces not normally included in the concert suite, and 3 wonderful pieces for childrens choir. Any Ivan Fischer/Budapest Festival Orch. recording is IMHO well worth having.
