Last night on the French/German channel ARTE, caught a documentary about Ravel, called Ravel's Brain. It combined surreal imagery, some faked footage of Ravel and his friends along with some real footage, and impressive combinations of his music spliced together. It was hard to tell some of the time, if the film was real or acted.
It spoke of the last years of Ravel's life, and how after Ravel had lost his creativity they decided that it was better to have the chance in a million that primitive brain surgery could offer, than to let him continue to live as he was.
I remember a documentary about Ravel, perhaps 20 years or more ago, with Manuel Rosenthal, and Gaby Casadesus, both shown in this documentary, Mme Casadesus still, at age 98 playing the piano. Sadly, the documentary noted that she had died in 1999, presumably during or shortly after the documentary was filmed. As for Manuel Rosenthal, pupil and friend of Ravel, and of course composer in his own right, he would be 97 this year, but one web site lists him as dying in 1994.
