Hey all.. I have a question for you. Could you please tell me what Mozart piece this is? http://www.comma.net/mozartclip.wav I found it in the movie Amadeus, however, it doesn't show up on the soundtrack. The sound of this piece just resonates with my soul. Thank you much!!! -Paul Irish

Funny it's not on the soundtrack, since it's the piece that sets Salieri on fire in the first place : Adagio (3rd movement) from the Serenade in B flat major K. 361 for winds. If I may also recommend a recording : Orpheus Chamber Orchestra (DG).

... known as the 'Gran Partita' or 'Serenade for 13 Winds' [which isn't entirely accurate, since the 13th is a double bass]. I recommend Hogwood/Amadeus Winds (L'Oiseau-Lyre) and Halstead/ Winds of the OAE (BBC

en0.news.prodigy.com>:

One recording I miss, and would love to have on CD, is Klemperer's, which used a contrabassoon instead of Mozart's specified double bass

Don't you recall Canute commanding the sea to be still?

Outside the small world of classical music, 'song' is no longer restricted to solo-voice-with-accompaniment, but refers to just about any piece of music.

Even if there were an Academy for the English Language, and even if you were a member of it, you _still_ wouldn't have any say in the matter.

Wellp; that's almost the entirety of the English-speaking world.

The more of a snob you set yourself up to be, the more you will drive away the curiously naive, whose interest needs to be cultivated if art music is to survive.

I suppose we could all resign to the tyranny of the ignorance of the uninformed - but if there is any value in the art form which you are all squabbling about, why not continue to educate by example? There is no respect, in my view, for either arrogant dismissal (which, by the way, was not Matthew's attitude) or spineless submission. The young do not know everything - or am I just having a crisis?
