I was listening to my collection of RMMS members' mp3s, using the Windows media player. While a song is playing, I notice information about the track being displayed near the bottom of the media player window. Some mp3s only show the bitrate, but others have info about copyright, the artisit, etc. How is this information added to the mp3 file? I use dB PowerAmp to convert wavs to mp3, but I didn't see any options to add this info. Thanks for any help.

You need an mp3 ID3 editor. Most mp3 players, other than Media Player, will allow you to edit the ID3 tags (Winamp does).

When releasing mp3s to the public, you should always put your email, copyright, authoriship and URL into the ID3 tags.

: Apparently anyone with : the software can change the tag info of anyone's mp3? Seems like there : ought to be a way to make the tag a permanent part of the file...

Well, once you have a copy of the file, you can do anything you want with it, just like any other file. If it were encrypted, we'd just figure out a way to get around it, just like everything else. But to make it really part of the file, it has to be imbedded into the data itself. That's what audio watermarking is all about. And on that note:

snipped

There are ways to embed and encrypt such information, and also licensing info, the number of plays permitted for the file and which software can play it. Microsoft is working on it. The Microsoft - AOL legal settlement may have something to do with getting these features standardised and widely accepted.
