From the NY Times:

Due to the new financial situation we find ourselves in, The New York City Opera has had to exchange all it wonderful new plans of renewal and makeover for a more Conservative program for the upcoming year.

The New, now ex, General Manager and Artistic director, Gerard Mortier has resign his position even without the first season having begun. The renovations to the building have begun, but non of his other plans to completely renew and change the operas programing, introducing new and innovative materials will be carried out.

The reasons of course are monetary differences  - Mortier had requested a budget of 60 million dollars and the board agreed to only 36 million which is a cut down from the previous years budget. Even though Mortier Suggested starting the year in a deficit, full knowing that the coming season would be attractive enough to raise money, because of the financial situation neither the board of directors chose a more conservative approach.
I hope that the New York Opera will find someone worthy to navigate them through these troubled times.

I have to agree with James Roe on the sadness of the situation, all that accumulated talent ….is sadly not good for much without the right person managing it.
