I'm pretty sure he achieved icon status in the early 70s. Probably as early as the Mike Douglas appearance. Ironically, he was schedule to do another appearance when he was shot.

'Mike Douglas appearance'??? What could that possibly have to do with it? John Lennon was an icon around where I live from about 1963 or so. Perhaps it took a little longer for the U.S.A. to catch on.

Actually, I'm wrong. I've been in lots of places in the world that have their very own icons that people in the You Know Where have never heard of. And John Lennon is an icon in plenty of those places too. I guess the thing You Know Where-ians are going to have to face is that John Lennon was not a You Know Where-ian.
