Reading soundclicks web site I personally would not want them to have any rights to my work...So how does one post a song for this groups critique without signing away any power...

It is not accepting any new members because it is about to close down. As it is going broke. It is run by songwriters. Hence my reference to Tonos. It's a bit like ' pack up your dirty looks, your song that have no hooks your moving out today' Lets just say as a businesswoman Carol makes a dam fine songwriter.

I like your attitude, Andrea! As amazing as some people might be to hear it from me, I do think that the whole P2P is part of this process as well. I think it's the infancy of a new model, but it's missing a key component. I think the next evolutionary model will require people to hold the creation of aesthetic and intellectual works to be AS valuable as physical objects.
To me, respecting the artist-as-source includes respecting his or her rights to the use of the work that came from that source. I think that intellectual property is an evolutionary way of thinking, respecting irony as much as we do iron, music as much as we do baked mud. I don't usually get to talk about it in such 'airy-fairy' terms, as some of my friends would call it, but deep down, I truly believe that we will all be better off when we can respect someone's creation in thought in the same way we respect their creation in the physical world.
We're getting there... slowly... but I guess it's all happening in perfect time. :^)

I agree. They are spending their money as a consumer. Spending their money as a consumer is what makes that concert possible. No one could stage such a production unless people paid their money. Why does this same logic not apply to recordings?

This set-up works so long as you don't intend to derive income from your music separate from in-person performances. But let's say you did want to charge for recordings of your work. How would then approach the problem of copies of your music being distributed via P2P without your permission? There is no business involved in distributing your work.... just a network of consumers.
I'm seriously interested in your response, because you're obviously someone who has been involved in this issue (including the hearings in DC) and must have thought about it quite a bit.

Well, when YOU say it, it sounds silly. :^) LOL
Agreed, if it's a name band, it would be hard to claim. But what if it was Andrea or dtking? Seems like I could easily claim it.
What I understand us to be discussing here is not preventing the use of it, but recovering damages after the fact and attempting to selectively enforcing the use of it.
Fundamentally, there is no way to prevent almost anything
