I've read various takes on these in various sources or not found concrete answers, interested in more perspectives from living breathing people.

1) From what I understand, to have a publishing deal with a publisher who is BMI affiliated, you must be a BMI affiliate, and same with ASCAP. Now, can I be a member of both? Is there a problem with doing this?

2) If I was to do just one, any suggestions which is better beyond choosing the one which gets more songwriters songs on a CD (which my research said was ASCAP?)

3) Ought I affiliate even before I send out my first demos to publishers, or should I wait until a deal arrives?

As a publisher you can belong to both, although not using the same business name, two seperate companies need to be formed. As a writer you can only belong to one, but most publishers that get cuts belong to both.

I don't think you will find concrete answers...different people prefer different PRO's for various reasons.
