I've listened to Shostakovich's 8th string quartet performed by Fitzwilliam, Brodsky, Istanbul (Award winner in the international Shostakvich string quartet competition), Borodin and Kronos quartets.

I think none of them but Brodsky can give the full violence of the second movement and the poignant contrast between the DSCH in the 1st and the 5th movements (tremolo vs straight).

I was hoping for something better from Borodin, but found it quite average.

The Yggdrasil Quartet gives a good account of the Eighth; they don't have the most refined sound (a sort of 'grainy' tone), but they really get into the raw emotionalism of it.
