Are you sitting in the dark, Irene?

No, I'm on the westcoast, nothing wrong here. Lots of rumours going around though, about what is causing this and I've got my eyes glued to the news.

I'm making coffee ... 6 hours north of Toronto, Ontario

We were very much in the dark ... next to no info about why we were in the dark ... couldn't even tune in to CBC radio. Our local radio station was being powered by a gas generator ... keeping us company in the dark and letting us know where we could get gas for our generators ...

I'm on call with our local victim crisis services ... we had no cell phones or pagers last night and they are useless this morning ... I'm glad I haven't rid myself of my land line yet ... this really impacts on our response time ...

Take care everyone!

Janice

Hang in there Janice, we're thinking of all of you. The only blessing may be this was summer instead of winter, and that's not much consolation I know. We're such a dependent people these days, and we take so much for granted...kind of frightening...no, really frightening. : ( I've been working in the yard, trying to catch up, and the heat and humidity send me running for the house several times a day...a shower and another iced tea and things are great again, but then you read that 3,000 deaths in France have been attributed to the heat wave, and you feel pretty foolish whining about being wilted a bit. I remember as a kid, (long, long ago) we had big box fans, but they didn't do much more than blow the hot air around, but somehow I picked up the trick of placing dripping wet wash cloths over my feet in bed at night, and you know it seemed to work as good as air-conditioning does now. ; ) I can't even imagine though, if this were the dead of winter, and we were faced with trying to keep warm...hopefully these problems will be taken care of before that happens. Hope you're back up to power real soon!

Sounds quite scary, Janice.

No cell phones, hmnn, that's a warning to me to keep the land line.

Let's hope y'all see the light soon

Dolores (who doesn't like the dark and has to keep a light on in the hall all night - what a big baby!)

Obviously you were not thinking of the 45 year old at home on dialysis ... or the unclaimed 3 year old at daycare ... or the 9 & 10 year old children of a single working parent who couldn't make it home last night ...

I've got the coffe on ... can you smell it?

My first reaction to news of power failure was that it would be on again in a few hours. I had faith in the power grid system. I could not believe the scenario that has presented itself. I think Janice is speaking with the benefits of hindsight, and Sean, tongue-in-cheek.

We have the absorb situation where the power stations are capable of supplying the energy, and they are joined by wires to the points that require it, but the required switching cannot be done. I have not seen the news for a while. My guess is that a software fault is responsible for the resulting chaos, whatever the precipitating action. If I am right, the interesting thing will be whether it was an accident, or malicious, or whether whoever is responsible has succeeded in covering their tracks. I have to believe there is an attempted cover-up in progress, surely the causes must have been known pretty quickly.

I told you it was a 'first reaction' that was soon corrected. Anyway, you don't live in Toronto, do you?

Totally off topic post follows.

It must have been a scary few minutes until you found out what was happening no power no cell phones you are going to think the worst. I hope all our American friends are well and bearing up. Speaking of our American friends it may have escaped your notice but on Tuesday In Ayutia (the old capital of Thailand) the CIA caught and arrested the head Honcho big cheese of Jama Islamia, this is the Asian version of El Quaida, this guy is their Osam Bin Laden, he is the arshole who organized and authorized the Bali Bombing. That killed 80 odd of out kids last year and maimed 100 of others together with some Brits and Americans and other pack packers. So if any of you Yanks have relatives or friends in the spook business tell we said Good be upon you and thanks.

Cheers
