Tradition, Repetition And Messiah

I am not a christian and have never really celebrated Christmas, although, for anyone, living in the Western world, christian or not, Christmas is not something that goes unnoticed.
As I child I was always envious of my friends who year after year had a tree to decorate and piles and piles of presents to open on Christmas morning.

I didn’t live in a snowy climate, so, in the spirit of a perfect Christmas, I was always sorry for my Friends and for myself that the romance of a snowy Christmas was not ours to have.
I am not a child any longer, and have children of my own, but still, Christmas has its charm.

I guess its because I am a sucker for tradition of any kind (Don’t think that the wonders of Gefilte fish are lost on me year after year after year after year) because the repetition of little ceremonies again and again at the same time every year, have a rhythm that is wonderfully calming, giving both a sense of security and purpose, and a point in time to contemplate the time passed and the time to come before the Ceremony, (being it Christmas, Hanuka, Passover or New Year) is repeated once again.

The only problem with growing up is that the period of time between each repetition is shorter and shorter as the years go bye… anyway, I am rambling on and on, when all I wanted to do was post this

Händel - Messiah “But who may abide”, Emma Kirkby
and send you over to John Brough’s blog, Podium speak, to a post he wrote repeating Handel’s Messiah again and again and again. (Read the comments to!)
