Why did the people back in the 18th and 19th centuries believe that the violin was the devil's instrument?

Well, I've read many stories about the violin, one of them that i read was about Paganini and one of the audience members said that Paganini's violin sounded like 'an icy hand of death that touched them'. And also, Tartini's violin piece called 'devil's trill' sonata that he claimed it was composed by the devil himself in his dream. So, i was just curious about it. I myself find the violin fascinating.
